The monarch life cycle - First flight

Next morning, we found our newborn butterfly still in its cage, hanging next to its empty chrysalis.

Perhaps it was too cold. Let's place the cage in the sun and see what happens!

It worked! Now warmed up, the monarch begins opening and closing its new wings.

Now we know for sure: it's a boy!

Here is a page explaining the main differences between a male and a female monarch

Still somewhat clumsy, our butterfly fell down to the bottom of the cage. This time though, we can see that he is just fine.

Yes! He can fly! First landing: on a bush, just three feet away

Isn't he gorgeous?
